The Journey is Yours!

03/06/2023

Starting your fitness/nutrition journey is already a feat in itself, right? So if you've made it this far, I'm so proud of you! But let's dig a little deeper...

It's important to know that "eating better" is relative. It means something different for everyone. Some people struggle with eating too much.  Some people struggle with eating too little. Others just have no idea what to do and just try a little bit of every diet their favorite influencer mentions. Some people are used to a certain level of exercise.  In recent years, the word diet has gotten a bad rep because it has become almost synonymous with deprivation and sadness. The word diet has a few different meanings in the dictionary but the purpose of dieting remains the same. That is eating a certain way to reach a particular goal. Whether that be restricting the amount you eat or the types of foods you eat depends on the problem you are trying to solve. The same goes for workouts.  A beginner workout may be challenging for someone who has never worked out before, but to someone who is a former athlete, a beginner workout may seem too easy. The important thing to know is that if you don't find a nutrition plan or workout plan that addresses YOUR particular issues or relates to your goals, you are wasting valuable time.

Scenario:

Let's say you want to lose weight. You decide to start running as your workout of choice. You see that your favorite influencer stopped eating carbs and lost lots of weight so that's what you do. You consistently get your runs in, you stop eating carbs, and you've lost some weight, but you feel terrible, exhausted all the time, and you haven't lost as much weight as quickly as others... WHY?

Well, what you didn't take into account was that the influencer cut carbs but wasn't working out as much as you and definitely wasn't running. The influencer was 50 lbs overweight, when you just needed to lose the last 15 lbs. You've been working out for 6 months already and the influencer just started. She's 22, you're 35... You see what I'm getting at? The two people are not the same. Their journeys are not the same!

There are still so many more questions to ask and reasons why this scenario didn't work out but there are infinitely more scenarios that parallel this one. We haven't even scratched the surface! You must treat your journey as if it is unlike anyone else's. You may even have the same body type and similar nutrition and fitness goals, but mentally you may not be able to handle the same things. A trainer that pushes one person to work harder harder may make another person just give up simply based on the way they talk to the client.

Takeaway:

Figure out what your goal is. Take a look at what you've been doing to get where you are and figure out what changes need to be made to get to the goal!  You will make mistakes. It will take time. Just remember to be honest with yourself and give yourself grace but don't give up! You got this!
